There is very little to a shepherd’s hut: one room, a bed, a wood-burner, and if you are lucky a compact shower and loo at one end. Put a hot tub in the field beside it and you have removed almost every decision a holiday normally asks of you. That is the appeal, and it is a real one — this category exists for people who want less, not more, and it does not work as a compromise version of a cottage.

It follows that the things that go wrong are different too. The hut itself is rarely the problem; huts are small enough that they are hard to get badly wrong. What varies enormously is the field. A hut in its own paddock with a gate and a view is a completely different stay to a hut in the corner of a site with five others and a shared shower block, and both are sold with the same words.

This is the single most important thing to establish before booking, and the listings vary wildly in how clearly they say it. Some huts are fully self-contained: shower, flushing loo and a two-ring hob inside. Some have a private bathroom in a separate small building a few paces away. Some share a facilities block with the rest of the site. All three get described as a shepherd’s hut with a hot tub.

None of the three is wrong, but they suit very different people and very different weather. A shared block in July on a warm site is a non-issue; the same walk in February at two in the morning is a different holiday. Hut tubs skew wood-fired far more than lodge tubs do, because the setting suits it and because a field often has no three-phase power. A wood-fired tub is a genuinely lovely object — you light it, it takes an hour and a half to two hours, and the whole thing becomes an activity rather than a facility. It is also an hour and a half to two hours, which is worth knowing if you were picturing a soak on arrival after a four-hour drive.

Electric tubs at huts behave like tubs anywhere: thermostatically held at temperature, ready when you are, and slightly less romantic. Neither is better. But arriving at a wood-fired tub in the rain with no kindling and no idea it was wood-fired is a specific and avoidable disappointment, so we note the heating type where the provider states it rather than leaving it to the photographs.

Wales has the deepest supply by a distance — small farms across Powys, Carmarthenshire and the Cambrian coast have taken to huts enthusiastically, and the prices reflect a market with real competition in it. Cornwall is the other strong region, usually on smallholdings a field or two back from the coast path.

Devon and Scotland have fewer but often the best-sited: a hut works best with something to look at, and both regions have no shortage. Elsewhere in the country huts turn up as one-offs on working farms rather than in any concentration, so if a specific date is fixed it is worth widening to glamping or a small cabin with a hot tub rather than holding out for a hut. Almost every hut sleeps two. A handful sleep three or four with a fold-down or a child’s bunk at the stove end, and they are cosy in the honest sense of the word rather than the estate-agent one. Dogs generally work well here, since a hut usually comes with a field and the whole arrangement is more forgiving of muddy paws than a smart cottage. Check the specific policy on the provider’s page, and check whether the field is stock-fenced and whether there are sheep in it — a hut on a working farm in spring is not the place to find out your recall is unreliable.

Huts price below cottages and cabins for the obvious reason that there is less of them, but the gap is narrower than the square footage suggests — you are paying for the field and the privacy as much as the building. A two-night midweek stay outside the holidays is where this category is at its best value, and it is also the length that suits it: huts are wonderful for two or three nights and start to feel small at seven.
